As part of the annual “You Count” survey of homelessness in Chelan and Douglas counties, our East Wenatchee library is collecting winter clothing and supplies that will be distributed during the Jan. 23 survey.
A donation box is now located at the library through Jan. 17, collecting new or gently used winter clothing for men and women, along with hats, gloves, new underwear, socks, hand warmers, travel-sized hygiene products and dry shampoo.
The items will be distributed as volunteers conduct a comprehensive count of people who lack a fixed and stable night-time residence. The volunteers will visit parks, trails, bus stations, soup kitchens and other locations, distributing supplies and providing referrals to a wide variety of social service resources.
“You Count” is part of a nation-wide effort to measure the extent and severity of homelessness in America.
In 2019, 412 people were counted as being homeless in Chelan and Douglas counties — with 125 of those people sleeping in places not meant for habitation.
