Martin Luther King Jr. was a minister and activist who advanced civil rights for people of color through nonviolence and acts of civil disobedience. He championed the right to vote, desegregation, labor rights, and other civil rights and protested against poverty, capitalism and the Vietnam War. He gave his famous “I have a dream” speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial during the 1963 March on Washington.
He was assassinated in 1968, and MLK Jr. Day was established as a holiday throughout the U.S. starting in 1971.
