What to Read For Earth Day

Earth Day is officially April 22, but is really a movement that has been growing for more than 50 years.

In the decades leading up to the first Earth Day, Americans were consuming monumental amounts of leaded gas in inefficient cars, industries were released vast amount of unhealthy smoke into the air, and the public was largely unaware of the impact their actions were having on the environment, according to Earth Day organizers.

Then author Rachel Carson released her transformative book Silent Spring in 1962, raising public awareness and concern for the environment and the links between pollution and public health. That set the stage for the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970.
